Memory comes in many shapes, sizes and capacities.  They have names like DIMM, SIMM and SODIMM.  Most desktop computers today take DIMM’s (Dual In-line Memory Modules) laptops take SODIMM (Small Outline DIMM)

The memory is used by the computer to store the running programs and data.  Graphics programs and video programs use a great deal of memory and work better if there is plenty installed.

If a Windows computer doesn’t have enough memory it will start using the hard disk as a temporary storage area for programs that aren’t active.  This will slow the computer down.

The maximum memory capacity is determined by your computer motherboard and your operating system.
